conny63,
Oh, of course I agree with what you're saying -- and please note that I mentioned that bad breeding practices are "another issue" meaning that existing breeds can have horrible genetically caused problems due to poor practices by their owners when it comes to breeding lines with defects. There are plenty of healthy dachshunds, and it's a shame that you're poor puppy did not fare well in the breeding process.

verity,
Since this thread is about dogs, my rant was just about dogs. I have an "issue" with the creation of breeds in any species that messes with the animal's ability to function normally. Again, human vanity -- we play with the lives of other living things for our own amusement. IMO we take it much too far sometimes.

The perpetuation of the breed of "fainting" goats is a particular peeve!

Such an interesting discussion!   So, it's 'bad' to try to change dogs but not 'bad' to do the same with chickens, rabbits, and cows?!

I think it's great there are so many types of dogs -- truly 'something for everyone' ---

There are, of course, reputable breeders and the ones who have puppy-mill situations --

In my many years of life-with-dogs I have not had any dog who did not, at some point, have health issues --- purebred, rescued, or bred-by-me --
at our house we like 'em all --- would never ridicule any dog or the person who owns it -- each is unique -- :)

I 100% agree!
