I've been reading alot of Eric Sloane's books lately - a very talented artist who documented old styles of living, antique tools, etc. I very much enjoyed "American Yesterday" and picked up "Reverence for Wood" and "A Museum of Early American Tools" - I know that the books are meant to document old ways of living, but I love the drawings he has done of it all as it serves for ideas of things we'd like to personally create.
His intense documentation of log cabin styles and the axes/methods used to create them is something we want to really study, as one of our goals is to eventually build a smaller cabin with nothing but hand tools. These books are great for those who not only are fascinated with early American history, but those who may want to study into a more self-sufficient lifestyle and go back to roots.
The books serve as tools to really reflect and appreciate the difficult tasks people had to make items we take for granted every day.
