What’s In A Name?

Yeah I hear guineas are pretty dumb but I think they might eat more bugs than chickens, if you were wanting just bug control I thought guineas might be better.
I think its a trade off one on one for bug eating.... But Guineas serve an additional function... They are walking burglar alarms.... This includes people, buckets in the wrong spot, My PINK Bathrobe... Hawks, :gig

They get out in the road hunting bugs along the ditches... or on the other side. I have eighteen acres and they ranged the whole place. When I heard their voices were getting too far away I would bang on a bucket and holler Treat Treat Treat... I have seen them come from the rocks fly over the house and touch down in the yard.... Threw some scratch for everyone...

All my poultry are conditioned to come home on that signal... so I have to feed everyone.

Everything can be eaten. The rabbits, guineas and grasshoppers.
Just say no to guineas. Trust me no one wants to hear those d@mn things screaming butt crack all day long.
I've found the ducks do better then chickens with eaten bugs
BWahahahahnnnYep there is that... I hear buckwheat... its only the females....

Oh I know its only females I've always got guineas here.
You hear buck wheat because you've been brainwashed into hearing it by the PC PG patrol.
Next time you hear them think butt crack and tell me that's not what they're really saying.
Or maybe I've always just had redneck guineas.

Interesting.
So Les poules means chickens.
What is the words for hen and rooster?
(I know I can Google but that isn't always fun or right.)
Poules are hens, poulettes are poulets, roosters are coqs and cockerels are (arrrrgh mid blank have to get back on that one!). I wasn't sure about the generic word for 'chickens' everyone just talks about having 'poules'. I actually asked my half Frech dh and we double checked online so the generic word for chickens is actually officially 'poulet' which is also the word for those that you eat! As I said though I've never had a conversation with anyone about my 'poulet' - that is what we cook so not sure if that is really the correct word! I'll talk to my neighbour next time I see her to get the 'real' info!

@TropicalBabies, I am sitting here watching “Buying Hawaii” and have seen many properties that already have chicken coops, citing offset of high cost of eggs and centipede eaters. I know there are several people on BYC from Hawaii and I guess that may be partly why. My DH and I have visited Oahu twice, but we never were able to see any of the local farms with chickens. I am curious to know how much a dozen eggs and a 50# bag of layer feed costs.

Always depending where you buy the eggs of course... Costco is about $5+ for 18. Local stores are much more $$ and farm fresh I have seen as much as $12 for 18. Cost of a bag of feed- organic layer to non organic keeper- it runs about $30 per 50lb bag on average. I don't think I am saving any money with raising chickens myself, the opposite i'm sure unless I can keep all healthy and start selling eggs. Residential has coop and number requirements but we have so many wild chickens here it most likely is not enforced unless you have a grumpy neighbor. Like another poster stated... there are so many dogs barking at night, loud cars and neighbors. I don't think anyone should be fussy about chickens or roosters myself. They are a lot harder to keep than I had hoped, our wild birds get a lot of the feed along with bringing disease. The heat and humidity can be brutal and I have to be on it with the poop because it gets stinky (er here). They eat bugs but also my garden... With that said, I am on my first year learning curve, also a little obsessed with my girls. They are pets too. I love the taste of fresh eggs and I like to share when I can. And I love that I don't have to purchase eggs any more!!!!!! :yesss::ya:celebrate:love:wee
Great you came to our Aloha State to visit. Please come see our outer islands ;). For play and beautiful water- Maui, for lush green- Kauai, for Hawaiiana- the Big Island. Oahu is pretty terrible and does not represent us well. And I think buy and sell Hawaii says cheesy things sometimes. In my 40 years here I have met only a small handful of people who raise chickens. Most go out and buy and then go to the beach and have fun. Smart...:barnie
