What’s In A Name?

Pics
Turns out my name isn’t too common in the US so I almost always just use it for usernames. Probably because Tasha is a Russian name and François is French. Also, if you google my name they are like 90% women of Haitian decent. Since they have French last names and Tasha is pretty popular in the African American community. My husband is Haitian. :)

OK now I love Black squirrels
They are Melanistic versions of Grey squirrels or Fox Squirrels.... Just like Ayam Cemenis...

Yes. Very similar to the melonin thats produced to create black panthers. Almost all creatures produce it and it makes them like ninjas able to blend in with the dark

Well I would but they haven't lasted this long. I got out of school over 10 years ago and my last surviving pair was stolen by an ex.

I cooked professionally for a few years. I just was at the local fiber fair yesterday where I got a cotton spindle some cotton fiber and some hemp fiber. I knit all my own hats and scarfs and crocheted a large thick blanket last year. Right now I'm being paid to be a welder so I maintain my man cred at work.
Wow, I am amazed at all your abilities. That’s pretty cool. And at least you put up an avatar. :yesss:

I think its a trade off one on one for bug eating.... But Guineas serve an additional function... They are walking burglar alarms.... This includes people, buckets in the wrong spot, My PINK Bathrobe... Hawks, :gig

They get out in the road hunting bugs along the ditches... or on the other side. I have eighteen acres and they ranged the whole place. When I heard their voices were getting too far away I would bang on a bucket and holler Treat Treat Treat... I have seen them come from the rocks fly over the house and touch down in the yard.... Threw some scratch for everyone...

All my poultry are conditioned to come home on that signal... so I have to feed everyone.

I agree that birds, dogs, and heck, even horses need to know to come when called. There are too many times a dangerous situation may present itself and they need to be gathered, immediately. IMHO my birds have been the easiest to train, hands down. You wouldn’t think that a handful of scratch would have birds breaking their necks to get to it. I swear it’s a drug for birds. I wonder if I act that crazed when offered a handful of carbs? Mmmmm, yeast bread, yeah, probably so!

Always depending where you buy the eggs of course... Costco is about $5+ for 18. Local stores are much more $$ and farm fresh I have seen as much as $12 for 18. Cost of a bag of feed- organic layer to non organic keeper- it runs about $30 per 50lb bag on average. I don't think I am saving any money with raising chickens myself, the opposite i'm sure unless I can keep all healthy and start selling eggs. Residential has coop and number requirements but we have so many wild chickens here it most likely is not enforced unless you have a grumpy neighbor. Like another poster stated... there are so many dogs barking at night, loud cars and neighbors. I don't think anyone should be fussy about chickens or roosters myself. They are a lot harder to keep than I had hoped, our wild birds get a lot of the feed along with bringing disease. The heat and humidity can be brutal and I have to be on it with the poop because it gets stinky (er here). They eat bugs but also my garden... With that said, I am on my first year learning curve, also a little obsessed with my girls. They are pets too. I love the taste of fresh eggs and I like to share when I can. And I love that I don't have to purchase eggs any more!!!!!! :yesss::ya:celebrate:love:wee
Great you came to our Aloha State to visit. Please come see our outer islands ;). For play and beautiful water- Maui, for lush green- Kauai, for Hawaiiana- the Big Island. Oahu is pretty terrible and does not represent us well. And I think buy and sell Hawaii says cheesy things sometimes. In my 40 years here I have met only a small handful of people who raise chickens. Most go out and buy and then go to the beach and have fun. Smart...:barnie
Yes, eggs there are much more expensive, but so is everything else. I definitely could buy eggs cheaper and think most hobby keepers don’t make money on their chickens; however, the chickens themselves make up for the $ deficit because we love them, yes, even those of us who slaughter some from time to time.

I live way out so I don’t have to worry about neighbors, but I will say, aside from the cockerels I have, my girls can ‘raise the roof’ with the noise they make. I don’t think I could even begin to hide them if I wanted to. And you are correct about things smoothing out after a bit. I am only 2 1/2 years into keeping them and have already learned more efficient and less expensive ways of keeping them. But, it is a labor of love. Nothing pays you for their upkeep, unless you have a huge operation I suppose.

I was able to make the first trip to Oahu with my DH on a business trip in 2003. Some parts were stunning (and extremely interesting), but then others parts were very depressing. I couldn’t imagine living like some I saw, knowing how expensive it was for them. And because of that expense, there would be no play for me. I guess it’s a trade off for some that live there. However, I must say that we did like it enough to then take our boys back, and a tag a long girlfriend, for my oldest son’s high school graduation trip in 2004. Luckily, I have seen Pearl Harbor twice, :hitand loved it; went to two luaus, the North Shore, the Polynesian Cultural Center and the pineapple plantation. I rate all of it a 10++! BTW, I loved all the farmland up around the north end of the island. I am not crazy about the windward side’s cloudiness and rain though, but I do love it’s lushness. I started to say one day my DH and I would love to visit Maui, but I’ll have to teach my son how to properly care for my chickens while away. After all, I do care for his horses when he’s away...but that’s just expected, if you know what I mean.

It has been wonderful chatting with you and learning more about my “cuz’s.” :lau I wish you and your Tropical Babies all the best.
