I use a 2x4 that has rounded edges, wide side up. You're going to get lots of different answers to the roost question. LOL

Maybe your boys could do an experiment, each trying a different style roost and see which type the chickens prefer???

My birds hate herbs I spent a pretty penny on herbs to have them stop laying for a day until I took the herbs away

What are they sheltering of hiding from?
One thing I'd suggest is that they use screws to build, so they can take it apart to modify or build something else.

They might experiment with tree branches for roosts.

Just general birds etc during the day. They have a safe coop but they like places to hide
