I have two chicks supposedly australorps, and they have a funny thing on their head. Just wondering what it was and maybe if they aren’t full australorp, could they maybe be crossed with a brahma? They are about 4 weeks old. Here are some photos

I tried to get good photos but I’m just wondering what that little raise in feathers on their head is.

Not pure Australorps. They might or might not have Australorp in their background but they certainly have something with a crest in their ancestry. What do you know about the flock that they came from?
They are from my flock and the suspected dad I was told is an Sussex when I got him as a chick, but he looks more like a blue australorp. Maybe he could be sussex x australorp? I think they have an australorp mum because that is the only black coloured chicken I have besides my silkies. But my silkie flock is rarely exposed to my other flock because they are in different yards.

Am I misunderstanding that you are asking about bumps on the side of the head and not a crest of feathers at the top?

It is hard to see. Is there lumps going on under those raised areas..

They have nothing to do with breed/
