They all can be bad, but IMHO, hawks are the worst since a good electric fence keeps the ground dwellers at bay, hawks don't seem to mind figuring how to defeat covering of the run....

btw it is NOT illegal to "harass" them (other than a couple endangered species) killing without a permit (good luck getting that) is illegal. In fact there is a hawk thread here where the legality is explained in detail of running them off without killing them; and in my experience until they learn to fear you they WILL come right in with you there!

I have hawks, eagles, owls, fox, coyote, raccoons, opossums, weasels, the neighbors dogs, fisher cats and black bear as potential predators in my area. All have been on my property. We haven't had any attacks yet.
I worry most about the neighbors dogs and bears. I have lots of 1/2" HC and poultry netting but we do free range in the evening.
I've seen a video of a very large black bear going under an electric fence. You could see his body pulsing from the jolts. Didn't stop him.

I was going by what I was told by Missouri fish and game officer.
I should of known it was probably being twisted in their favor instead of what is actual true.

I will say I stand corrected and surely appreciate the info. This is something useful coming from this thread for me.

I'm now most curious if the electro shock set up on poles is indeed legal.
No threatened species just red tail and red shoulder hawks and great horned owls to deal with.

There is even a much better thread here (somewhere) that shows using means designated non-lethal is encouraged by the .GOV (sorry didn't find that one) for those who want to spend the time searching

I scare or herd raptors (excluding eagles) without hesitation. It is not done near nesting sites or on ground that is not mine. When Red-tailed Hawks nest in my landmark tree at SW corner of property, they are left alone. If you check my postings on owls and hawks you can find evidence that I do interact with them.

Yes I've seen your posts but was unsure about them.
I've always heard/seen it was illegal to trap or kill them and yet you post pics of an owl you trapped.

I do not trap them purposely, read more closely. I document what is caught and make adjustments to prevent repeats.

IF you even try to get a permit, one of the first things you'll have to do is show what non-lethal means you used (including bangers, screamers propane cannons etc.) to scare them off, also what other measures you have taken to protect your flock(s) . Since this IS the FED GOV you're dealing with and they require these actions, the idea it is illegal is IMO absurd. Yet so many repeat you can't scare them away...
