We have raccoons, skunks, weasels, owls, hawks, ravens, fox, coyotes...I live in the city so have only seen raccoons and skunks. I put up a huge privacy fence last winter but the skunks just dig under it and the coons just climb over it :)
I patrol my yard every day looking for signs that something has been in the yard, put my food up every night and always check coop and run......you cannot be too careful.

IF you even try to get a permit, one of the first things you'll have to do is show what non-lethal means you used (including bangers, screamers propane cannons etc.) to scare them off, also what other measures you have taken to protect your flock(s) . Since this IS the FED GOV you're dealing with and they require these actions, the idea it is illegal is IMO absurd. Yet so many repeat you can't scare them away...
I work with farmers that do get permits to deal with avian predators. All make their livelihood off their animals and they have to demonstrate non-lethal measures taken first. Backyard poultry keepers are not going to meet criteria needed to get permits because better exclosures are an option often not pursued first. Bone-headedness.

I do not trap them purposely, read more closely. I document what is caught and make adjustments to prevent repeats.
Yes I understand what I read but what would stop me from just going out and trapping them then saying oops my bad I was trying to trap racoons. I'll adjust in the future.
Didn't figure it would be wise to show pics of owls in traps. IDK

I do things to educate, actually part of job. I also engage wildlife biologist and speak freely with them about what happens. More people need to be more like me rather than treating interactions like a drug deal.

It IS illegal to harass wildlife in THEIR territory, i.e. open spaces, parks, wildlife refuges etc. It is not illegal to try to scare them away from your stock on your property. There is a difference.

That is a "non-starter" since no one I've seen even "hinted" about doing that, we're all talking about keeping our flocks safe from predators including hawks...and even then hawks are only a part of the predators being discussed as the poll makes pretty clear .
