I would recommend Sigrid Van Dort's book ,"the genetics of chicken colours- the basics". you can buy it from her in Europe .she has a website. that cost is about $82 USD. it is worth every penny. fabulous book. high-quality color. the first half of the book is a simple explanation of the genetics of chicken colors. the last half of the book is a treasure. it is an encyclopedia of pics of colored chickens, captioned by their genetic formulas. fantastic book .worth every penny. here's her website:

Hi if you are looking for just a plain Encyclopedia of chicken breeds do not get "storey's Encyclopedia of chickens" it has a bunch of mistakes in it.
Honestly , your very best choice to learn about different chicken breeds is the American Poultry Association Standard of Perfection .it's $52.oo it can only be bought from the American Poultry Association.
do not buy one of the older versions on a used book database. many times they are reprints and have are just poorly done Optical recognition copies.
get the real one. it just came out in a new edition. just go over to the American Poultry Association website and click on "Store "
and you'll find it right there.
