An update on our owl encounter. Turns out George is female, so now she is Georgia. An Ohio Division of Wildlife official came and picked her up - brought his family cause he had never seen one of these before = she is the Common Barn Owl and on OH's endangered species list. Last word is that she was going someplace in Mt. Olive, OH for rehab and then probably to a zoo. But we may have some more ODW folks coming to scout and search our property for her nest. These are beautiful birds. Very lucky to have had the opportunity to interact with it as we did - the kids too.

I had some owls hanging out around my house about a month ago. They stayed in the trees near my coop. I think they where trying to figure out how to get at my chickens. They left empty handed but I sure was nervous until they did. I heard a ruckus outside around 2 am one night and it was the owls in the yard. I could hear them but not see them. I went to check my chickens and all was well. But, by the time I got back to the house the owls had left the yard and headed for the woods about a half mile away. I never heard or seen them again after that.

As far as the legend that it is good luck to see one in the daylight, I heard that the other way. That it was badluck. And we have actually had bad luck since. I also heard that if you look an owl in the eye in the daylight that somebody close to you will pass away. I call that bad luck.

Now, if you get pooped on by a bird flying over head it is suppose to be good luck.

Amazing pics of the owl! Thank you so much for sharing them with us and I'm thrilled that you let him go! He'll definitely keep the more harmful predators away from your chickens.

Sorry about your roo.
Poor owl they rely on eye sight . Must be why it got into the trap for easy meal. I have never seen one do that

When I was around 17, some friends of the family brought a baby owl to us they had found it in the woods when they were mushroom hunting. Apparently fell out of the nest. They actually should not have taken it because it probably would have been fine but the damage was done because they took it home for a couple days before they brought it to us. My family was good at taking care of baby animals that were orphined.
He/she was a barred owl which is quite large looks like this one you caught. When he was grown my dad turned him loose. I think there was some concern that he might have been imprinted by humans and would not adapt to being wild. He came back to the house occasionally to get a hand out. And he would attack anyone that did not live at our house. If someone came to visit he would attack them. But eventually he stopped coming for the hand out and we know he survived because a couple years later he showed up when my dad was out in the woods. Came down sat in a tree close to my dad then left, he recognized and remembered my dad. Pretty cool kinda like he was saying thanks.

A great horned owl tried to get her little parakeets out of their cage head-first, so she found just two headless bodies left in the cage. The next day, her chihuahua came in with claw marks along it's back. Now, I'll probably get a lot of flak for this, but I was sure disappointed that owl never got that chihuahua. We are her neighbors and we had to put up with that horrible creature.

Love the Barn owl!!! We have several living in our date palms, and we've housed some orphaned barn owlets ONCE, will never do that again!! Yek. We have barn owls, burrowing owls, and elf owls living on my property, but I have never had a Great Horned Owl stay more than a few days. They are shyer than the rest, I think. Strange thing is I've never had any of my chickens or chicks eaten by an owl!
