What are battery chickens?

Every once in a while I read that someone has gotten some battery chickens & are nursing them back to health. In the pictures the chickens look terrible, usually thin & balding. Is this from a location or from any place that needs their chickens rescued?

Battery hens are those used in factory egg farms. Most often they are White Leghorns or Leghorn crosses. They are stuffed into small cages and are only there to eat, drink, poop, and lay. They often look very horrible. Rescuing one from a prison like that is a great accomplishment.

I'm pretty sure they are spent layers from commercial laying houses.

battery chickens are the chickens used in mass production egg laying. Google it and you will see some very terrible stuff. Makes me glad I don't buy eggs anymore. unfortunately, so many process foods have egg in them too.
