I would not use DE. It isn't all that great at getting rid of mites. It will kill all bugs, even beneficial ones. It's best to only treat birds as necessary with a pyrethrin based poultry dust. Make sure birds have places to dust bath in dry dirt to keep the mite population under control.

I've only had mites one good time on the faverolles feet and it was after two weeks of pretty much constant rain showers. Preventive measures did nothing so what i did was get the sentry spray for cats and just sprayed the feet and it worked wonders. I don't think I'd recommend it for all over but just for legs and feet it's a lifesaver.
