Essentially looking for hens that are pretty docile, but not so docile where they are just sitting ducks. Like human docile but Wiley against predators big and small. Run from hawks, intimidate cats.

Any of the dual purpose birds will do what you are asking about though some individuals will be better than others. chicken behavior will differ between individuals. The game breeds are known for being very flighty and aware of predators some are flighty around humans and others are calm and very friendly

Barred rocks are very good too. They're docile but still flee from predators. They lay very well too.

I agree on the BR's. Even the hatchery birds are pretty predator savy. I have one hatchery Roo that let's out a call and they all go flying and hide LOL ( I have yet to see what ever it is he is seeing? )....haven't lost a bird yet and Lord willing, won't with our set up. Lots of electric fencing going in, this spring, and bird netting over open spaces. I also spend a ton of time with them, when they are out of their "fort knox" pens/runs.

When I am not going to be home, the birds are in their runs that come off their coops. Not taking ANY chances here but since this is my "job". I am home most of the time

and just LOVE spending time with my birds and watching them.

Thanks everyone for the thoughts, unfortunately we are in a area where you can't have roos.
