what are people feeding there pigs?

We have two pigs that are just about redy to go to market. We feed pig grower finisher and all the leftovers. I do not feed them meat. We were told by a friend not to give them too much corn as it produces fat not meat. I also have two smaller piglets. I give them the same but I add oatmeal to their rations which they love. i use molasses as well in their slop.

I am going to a different feed store! The place I went to sold me just regular pig feed with no protein or anything. What a waste of money that was.

Grain, left overs from the fridge and what not, grass clippings. The local veggie farmer also gives up barrels of left over produce from time to time.
Remember what you give them is what you will be eating in their meat later.

I'm curious but what's it cost to process a pig? can you do it at home? We may get one next spring but swe want to know what we're getting into. I'm not trying to hijack, just figured it fit the topic.

On a humorous side note: One of our refrigerators died on us so we had to dump everything that we weren't able to save. In there was a bottle of BBQ sauce. The pigs loved it! They were "drinking" it out of the bottle. I told my hubby that I was marinating from the inside out. We will have to see how it works!

One of my coworkers has a few pot bellied pigs and tons of birds. She brings home a 5 gallon bucket of leftovers from customers plates almost daily. With all the waste restaurants produce, just makes me want a piggy even more. Such much good waste.

Prices vary reagionally. We pay more in the PNW than elsewhere. My slaughter pigs usually hang around 180 lbs and it's $0.82/lb to cut & wrap + $55 to slaughter (under USDA inspection) and additional fees for curing.

You have never had pork until you've raised and eaten your own. It's nothing like the stuff in the grocery store.
