I'm not talking about roosters, just hens. If I were to get a cranky neighbor who likes peace and quiet, which hens are the least likely to make that neighbor go batty? Which have the quietest regular cackling, quietest egg songs, etc.

Thanks in advance!

I agree. Great question. I believe I recently read someone recommend Serama to someone who was interested in a quiet chicken. I knew it started with an S and that it was one of those breeds I hadn't dabled with, so I went to the index page and reviewed the S's and I really think that was the one. But there are several breeds that claim to be quiet. That may be a future consideration of mine.

it really depends on the individual chicken and their personality, but, from my experience, if you want quite, DON'T get Silkies or Easter Eggers! my Silkie girl is really talkative but not overly loud, but the EE girls are screamers, especially first thing in the morning. if it was just egg song, i wouldn't mind, but they are YELLING at me for no good reason. it seems like their way of saying good morning...

my buff orp and buff brahma girls are quite and my gold-laced wyandotte girls are virtually silent. as far as temperment AND quiet, i would go with the orps or the brahmas- they are sweet and beautiful.

My golden buff ladies are nice and quiet....(same thing as golden comet, cinnamon queen, red star), the only time I ever really heard them get loud was when one got too close to the neighbor's dog (who was on a chain), and she sounded the alert! And I've had them for a year now, and that was just one time.
