I recently acquired 8 chicks from an auction and noticed that two of these chicks has these lumps on the end of its toes. What is this? Is it infectious ?

Pliers work well.A pair of small pliers can help pinch the crud ball to break it.
I had a hen with mud balls from playing in puddles and used the epsom salt soak and "slip joint" pliers in the setting that doesn't allow them to fully close so I didn't accidentally pinch a toe.
