I would lean toward picking a breed that is an egg producer, meat protein will be a waste of feed. The breeds like leghorn also are more flighty and will survive (if possible).
Yeah, unfortunately for me I'm running up against what I can do now vs. what would be ideal; I own a home by a huge lake, but poultry is banned. Quail "don't count".
Plus, bears. The quail are easier to protect than chickens.My quail are egg laying bred ones for the most part, though, since I don't have the big meat maker/jumbo lines. In an emergency I would eat all but two males and ten hens and have an indefinite supply of eggs, with a couple extra birds to cull every year as I bred replacements.
The high protein % required to keep them healthy is annoying, but I know some ant hills I can tractor them over if push comes to shove.
