What are you baking now?

Us too... really rough, but thankfully someone purchased me my third panini press from WilliamSonoma for Christmas, and I was so thrilled (my Aunt thought I was really excited to get the press... she'll never know because I have the same exact one)! I knew the blender was there and I simply exchanged it, I love it when I can exchange a gift without guilt. Otherwise I'd be stalking it online still myself. I had asked for one 2Christmases ago, but my DH knowing that I had seriously burned the motor out of the first one I owned, knew there wasn't one that was "me" proof. I beat the heck out of my kitchen toys.... anyway so he told me that he wanted to get me one, but he was afraid it would be a waste of money since I'd just kill it eventually. So he didn't buy it. He did get credit for doing a lot of research. He had found the Baumix, but at the time there weren't any being sold where he could go check it out, so when I heard WS had it, I was just waiting for the right time to spring. So after years of wanting one my want is filled, and my kitchen is one gadget happier.

By the way I just found a bunch of food processors on craigslist.org... you should look there as well if you don't find something at the thrift store. Good luck on your hunt.

Happy kitchen gadget shopping.

Strawberry shortcakes

Mix these ingredients together in a bowl...
1/2 c. butter
1/2 c. sugar
1 c. buttermilk
1 egg, beaten
3 tsp. baking powder
3 -4 c. flour (add 1 cup at a time and mix til stiff)

Roll out on floured surface, cut out. Bake at 400 degrees for 15 minutes. Slice strawberries, add 1/2 cup sugar and mix. Refrigerate til ready to use.

* I need to learn how to make homemade cool whip or just keep a couple tubs in the freezer all summer long

Boy that strawberry shortcake looks good!

I say that the food processor does the most out of those choices but if you want powdered sugar it's got to be the magic bullet. I make powdered sugar with it (still benefits from a little bit of cornstarch but I use a tiny bit compared to what you buy in the store). Love it mixed with cinnamon fo cinnamon toast or when making cinnamon rolls since I don't like the grainy texture of table sugar. But the magic bullet is not a great multi-purpose tool.
I originally bought mine for grinding nuts but it turns them into paste instead.

Jen4..don't you have a bulk food store in your area?..if so, they probably carry a whipped topping mix that is pretty good..we like it as well as cool whip..just not as good as real whipped cream

btw..your shortcake looks wonderful!!

I make powdered sugar in my vita mix all the time. I guess I wasnt aware that the store bought had cornstarch in it...I dont add it when I make mine. It seems to stay pretty good without it in am airtight container. My vita mix in ancient and I sure am glad I bought it when I did! The new ones dont look as sturdy to me. I guess I better get that machine out and make something with it! Terri O

(PS) the whip creamer that you charge with the nitrous tanks is great. Just dont store the little cylinders for too long...we had liquid cream at Thanksgiving!

WOW! guess I'm going to have to get out the Vita Mix that my Grandmother bought many years ago and give it a try. It's in excellent condition since I don't think she used it hardly at all. I thought it was only for juice, silly me.

Trying a recipe off the back of the bag of whole wheat flour that I get from our local mill. It is interesting since you make it , it's really sticky, no kneading and then you have to refrigerate for at least 8 hours to get it to become dough. They make the point that this is a good recipe for making the day ahead. The recipe is intended for dinner rolls.

They also say that it can be used for pizza crust and cinnamon rolls - so guess what I making Pizza tonight and rolls tomorrow. I'll let you all know how the dough works out.
