What are you canning now?

Isn't it wonderful how they all help each other? We watched a barn go up in a couple days here. It was a huge barn but everyone working together makes it go very fast. I would love to have them build me a house. Not that I want it fast, but their work is beautiful and well done.

Yes..we have an Amish built house on 20 acres right in the middle of our Community!! I have learned an awful lot over the 25 yrs of knowing them..only 8 in this community..the rest near a community south of here on the Tn line. I think discovering the bulk food stores has been the best discovery. I have been one of the drivers for this community and I have learned so much from them!!

Amazing!!! I can just picture it from your description!

We don't have any Amish living in this part of California (that I know of!). I have always been fascinated by stories about the Amish communities.

I have seen steers butchered in a barn. But that meat was going to be frozen after it was aged.

You said that you are a driver. Does that mean that you drive them when they need to go somewhere?

I certainly learn something every day on BYC!

Yes, I drive them to town for shopping, the Drs., the feed store and I occassionally drive the children that live too far to walk to school. Their lifestyle, language and beliefs are very interesting; but they are people just like you and I.

I have always had a lot of admiration for the life styles of the Amish!!! Would that EVERYONE might adopt some of their thoughts for LESS!!!! And they are VERY HARD workers!!! And very dedicated to their families!!!

We need more great examples like this for great family life!

I agree, we have a house in Maine that is right in the middle of the Amish community. They are the nicest neighbors and would do anything for you. My husband has given them rides plenty of times when they have needed it like to the Dr.s or the bus station. I wish I could cook like they do. We also love thier little store. We shop there all the time.

We have done business with the Amish community in Arthur, IL (about 1 hour's drive from us) since 1985, when we first got horses. For the most part, they do exceptionally crafted work, except for some of their businesses that are start-ups. I understand that they don't pay OUR taxes, so they can afford to charge less for some items, though they do VERY well with the sales of other items and services. We have ALL of our tack repairs done by the Amish. I finally got myself an Amish farrier a few years back, and now, I KNOW that he won't quit. When you get to know them, you can start to see those that become disenchanted, and they leave their church ( but not their community) and become Mennonites. These are the ones who drive trucks! If I can afford to buy a certain 1 year old filly, I'll have my farrier break her to drive. His ten year old son tacks up their driving horses, and I don't think that there ARE better gentled driving horses. A lot of people don't understand their horse needs. Arthur has paved all of the streets/roads that the Amish drive on. The cement and asphalt jars their bones and their legs wear out prematurely. Just thought you'd like to know...

We end up freezing a lot of berries each Summer and then making the jams for holiday gifts & sales. Did some strawberry jam last week - and we still have blueberries, raspberries, more blackberries & strawberries in the freezer, plus frozen grape juice and apple juice for jelly making.

can you post your blueberry pie filling recipe? I have so many blueberries this year in the freezer and if I don't get to most of them by February I'll have to can them.
