What are you canning now?

This is my First Ever, batch of strawberry jam! I planted the plants last year and this spring they have loaded me down. I just wanted some strawberries to eat and a little jam and jelly... Holy moly, I will have more than I ever dreamed of! It's ok though. It was fun! I have never canned anything in my whole life. My parents and grandparents did it.. And my hubby always takes care of the canning.. He enjoys it, so I have always just stayed out of his way! But he doesn't like strawberries so this was all on me. I did it! Now I just can't wait to try it. I did save out a little for breakfast tomorrow.

Your jam does look very good! I'm curios to know what variety of strawberries and how many of the the plants you planted to get more than enough to can and eat. I've never really dealt with strawberry plants.

Yum, strawberry jam! I've just recently started canning with my sister, so far only jams. I ordered a pressure canner though and can't wait to start canning veggies from my garden and meats. I'm loving becoming more self sufficient.

I hadn't dealt with them either. But I planted around 20 everbearing plants of Ozark Beauty in a raised bed lined with weedblock fabric (A must!!)... Once they started to grow, they put on a few blooms that I pinched off so the plants would get big and healthy.. Then they put on runners and set out new plants everywhere!!! I tried to cut them all off to keep my neat looking rows.. HA!! I couldn't keep up. So I finally gave up and now my raised bed is more of a strawberry patch than neatly lined rows.. Plus they overflowed into my yard a little. That works out ok though. I have a 3' fence around the bed to keep the chickens out. So whatever spread into the yard I let the chickens have, if the lawnmower doesn't get them first!! So 20 plants turned into a bunch.. I did pull a few of the new ones up this spring. I killed them versus replanting them.. If I had been prepared to have another raised bed I wouldn't have. DH told me to put them in the garden, but I like my raised bed with weedblock. I hate weeding!!!

I think I need to be on the lookout for Ozark Beauties! We just finished planting our first garden at this house last week as far as vegatables go. I'm companion planting a few herbs here and there to see what that is like. Herbs are completely new to me but from what I read they are great companion plants. I guess next on the list is strawberries! Thanks for all the info and the inspiration!!
