What are you canning now?

Does anyone have their own raspberry planting? I scored some plants at $2 each and wanted to know whether I should plant 3 rows five plants each or should I plant just one row 15 plant in a row? Of course that would mean either 3 , 12' rows or one 34' row. Or I buy another plant if I can and put in two rows 16' long.

I've had raspberries at several places and think I like one long row the best. If you don't have alot of time to keep them under control you can still pick them as the patch widens. The place we are in now had several rows and they had grown together so you couldn't pick the centre of the patch so we had to dig up a bunch an redo the patch.

Something else to think about is how tall they will grow. When we lived in Saskatchewan the growing season was shorter than here and they never grew taller than 5 to 6 feet. Here the season is longer so some of them grow 8 ft tall so we prune off the tops. Also the soil here is quite sandy and they have a tendency to lean over with the weight so we have the row growing between wires to keep them upright.

Hope this all helps. If you have any other questions, I can't answer tham until after Sept. 6 because I'm leaving shortly and have no internet access. PM me with any questions and I'll get back to you then.

We got two raspberry canes a few years back from a friend. Put them in and left them. One died. The other one grew. And grew. And took over the section of yard it was in. So, really? 15 plants is overkill. You're gonna be swimming in raspberries as it is. Just make sure you put them somewhere you can keep them in control. And I recommend one row.

Woot! Just picked up my jams I entered in the fair. Blues: blueberry lime jam, citrus marmalade, cherry jubilee jam and black cherry jelly. Red: strawberry rhubarb. Whites: black currant, vanilla orange

Oooh, blueberry lime sounds heavenly. So does cherry jubilee. Congrats on the wins!

My step dad is at a friends picking pears. He called and asked how many I want. I told him I'd take as many as he can grab.

I planted my blackberries in short rows FAR ENOUGH APART that I can get the lawn mower down the rows. I did short rows because I did not have a large enough space for one long row. I have 4 rows about 12 feet long. It makes it easy to pull out the sprinkler and water them when mother nature isn't being helpful
