What are you canning now?

There's a new brand of reusable lids out now..very similar to Tattler..only lower cost. :)
4ever recap...they have a FB page too..

Good to know!!!

Thanks for the link galanie...I like 'em too! Think I may lay in a supply before harvest time again. I'll keep the one-time-only lids for gifting and keep the reusable ones for home use. The price seems very reasonable and I like that we can keep so much waste out of the land fills and also that I won't have to keep replacing them all the time. Gonna see if I can get ahold of some other canners nearby and place a large bulk order...that would bring the cost down even more.

Question for all you experienced jam makers: Is there an easier way to crush berries besides using a potato masher? I was recently gifted with about 30 pounds of frozen mixed berries and will be making a lot of Triple Berry Jam. Really, I was thinking of leaving them frozen & pulsing them a few time in the old food processor.

I like the waste out of landfills thing too. Here I am, close to 60, one of the original "green" generation, and seeing folks use plastic bags while touting "green" - what hypocrisy!

I hear that. I often chuckle at all the "new" terms like organic and green. When I was growing up we didn't use all those terms...it was just the way ya lived. You couldn't afford to buy a new pan just because the handle broke, you just fashioned a handle by hook or by crook and used it that way.

I must confess though...once in a while I find myself at the store while the bags are at home. I always take them if I'm going shopping but sometimes we're running other errands and just stop in. If the store offers paper I'll use them but some times, I'm stuck using plastic. We do recycle them though...I use them for whatever I can around the house and when I get a sizeable stockpile, I either put them in the recycle bins at the store or take them to the food bank for use there.

Yeah I end up with the stupid things too sometimes. I save them and give them either to the local bird store or the feed store. If you pay attention you'll find a lot of places are using recycled bags and they'd be glad to have any you want to donate. At least that way they're getting used more often before polluting yet again.

PS - I still have an old small pan that my mother fashioned a new handle for out of some heavy aluminum scrap after the cheap plastic one it came with broke!

Cook the berries until soft over low heat. Then mash them.

If you want the seeds removed, then you'll have to use a sieve or a food mill.
