What are you canning now?

I like the Totally Tomatoes seeds, too.   Between them and Rare Seeds something tells me there's a lot of sauce canning gonna be happening Summer '15.

Is this the catalog?  Baker Creek has the best selection of seeds imho.

Do you know which companies are affiliated with Monsanto?

Over 400 seed companies in the US are NOT affliated with Monsanto. The list is huge.

Thank you.

Canning chicken tomorrow and that should be the last canning until spring culling. If just a few are culled, they will wait in the freezer until summer canning starts and be jarred then. LOVE having canned chicken on hand for a multitude of purposes, but mostly just for a hearty soup that can be produced in a jiffy.

I have yet to take care of a bird.

Scares me witless. I get so attached.

I love having the base of noodle soup ready to dump on a pot on busy days!

I get attached too. I don't think anyone can really have a flock of good layers and not get attached. The bird I killed today was a 6 yr old hen that was one of my favorites, a real sweety, an excellent layer and mother in her life and has raised many foster chicks for me. Loved her dearly. But, they get old and organs start to fail, so killing them while they can still be used for food is the honorable thing to do for a dear, old friend. A quick death and not letting their bodies go to waste in a landfill or buried in the ground.

It was a heartache to kill her but it's just good stewardship and I didn't want her to suffer. Now I can continue to enjoy her and she can fulfill her ultimate purpose in this world as energy for another. She had a good story. She left behind two young pullets in her image and they will have their own stories, I imagine. Can't wait to see if they turn out like their mother!
