Everything I've ever read about canning has always said do not can with corn starch. Anyone else every
heard/r.
I also read places that said do not use corn starch but also found places that said use it or flour but that sure gel worked better. I used cornstarch once before and the filling turned out ok but I think the sure gel thickens better. But I tend to use what I have on hand once I'm in the middle of it all!
Hi all. Brand new to 'canning' though I have ignored this thread a few times cause I
wanted to try bottling and didn't make the
connection duh![]()
I was given a bunch of Clementine oranges a few years ago and just canned( bottled) them in a light syrup. After all we buy Mandarin oranges in cans , right? And I have seen canned grapefruit as well. The biggest thing is getting that white pithy stuff off, otherwise it was definitely bitter and ruined the whole taste. Some of mine turned out good, some not so much. The ones given to me were not super fresh though and I think that made a difference too. Oh, and canned in syrup I had to use the pressure canner.
Anyhoo. I got given a heap of oranges and grapefruits and not knowing what else to make tried making marmalade. My bread maker has a jam setting so used that and I think it turned out okay.
I'm curious what other than marmelade you can make to bottle from oranges though as I've still got a heap.
Absolutely. We've got quite a few quarts of chicken, turkey, and beef broth/stock in the pantry. Just make sure you use a pressure canner. Ball Canning books/website should have several good recipes to follow. Can stock be canned?
Make orange juice then turn that into orange jelly. I put up several batches earlier this year and the stuff is great on toast. Grapefruit jelly would probably be pretty good too, if you like grapefruits. heheheHi all.
