I've had raspberries at several places and think I like one long row the best. If you don't have alot of time to keep them under control you can still pick them as the patch widens. The place we are in now had several rows and they had grown together so you couldn't pick the centre of the patch so we had to dig up a bunch an redo the patch.

Something else to think about is how tall they will grow. When we lived in Saskatchewan the growing season was shorter than here and they never grew taller than 5 to 6 feet. Here the season is longer so some of them grow 8 ft tall so we prune off the tops. Also the soil here is quite sandy and they have a tendency to lean over with the weight so we have the row growing between wires to keep them upright.

Hope this all helps. If you have any other questions, I can't answer tham until after Sept. 6 because I'm leaving shortly and have no internet access. PM me with any questions and I'll get back to you then.

I've been to the Maine site for raspberrys and it looks like I've got a hardy lot. Boyne. In fact there are late berries on a couple of the plants. Anyhow the site shows how to prune and tie up the canes so I hope to have neat rows. It explains how to keep things from getting crowded and tidy.

since I'm no professional I figure I would need more plants to get enough for the amount I'd like to process and some of the recipes call for other ingredients "plus" raspberries. Gooseberry/raspberry, red currant/raspberry etc. etc. Plus perhaps I can freeze some or sell them.

I have rhubarb growing out of control... i didnt even harvest it this year i still had it left from last year in the freezer.. my aunt makes a punch with it

ok you peach experts. I just finished pealing 1.5 crates of peaches and it was a PAIN!! I scalded them then iced them and every peach was different. Either they didn't peal, or the peals shredded and occasionally I got a few to actually peal. So the ones that I got frustrated with I pitted and put in my crock pot hoping to mill the peals off and an experimental 5 went into the freezer in hopes of thawing and having the peals come off. What do you think, will either work?

I found peaches to be touchy as far as peeling too. If they are a bit green they don't peel well, the peel sticks even after the hot then cold water bit. If they are a bit too ripe they get squishy. It has to be just right and they peel like heaven. Unfortunately on the same peach, you can have half greenish and half perfect! As far as using the mill for the peels, you may still have some fuzz. I made juice last year with the skins thinking I can strain off the peels, etc. You have to put it through muslin to get them all or the juice tasted gritty from the fuzz. But then the juice is too clear and you lose the fiber (I also made apricot juice and it worked wonderfully without peeling)

The last patch of green beans . I got 7 quarts and Iam done.
I got more grapes then expected so 10 half pints of Grape butter. My favorite!

Now that I've worked out all the kinks in my recipies lol. I used to live in Jacksonville when I was very young. We moved to Maine when I was about 6 years old.

I feel terrible you folks are doing so much. Lord have mercy all I've done is put up a few tomatoes in the freezer. They aren't ripening fast enough to can them. I've got quite a few on the vine too. Some that just grew from last years seeds. DW uses them for sauce. If I get the beds ready I'll do more next year Lord willing.

Now I know there are recipes for green tomatoes anyone got a good one? I've got to pick up the books from the library again. I've put in for every book I can find and saving my favorite recipes.
