What are you canning now?

Re: squash polination

I use to have problems with polination in my garden, not just squash but with everything. Since my neighbor decided to raise bees my garden is so much more productive. His "girls" are over in my garden all the time. I do my part by not spraying anything on my garden that would harm his bees. If he were to stop raising bees, I might give it a try myself because it has made such a difference. He sells honey and wax products at the farm market.

Something to consider if you have polination problems.

Sometimes the most basic deterents work! LOL DH goes out with the dogs when the coyote night be a problem. All the males "mark" their territory. Will definitely try to make a path the woodchuck won't cross. He ate everything last year. The bum.

I have boards holding the chicken wire down around the coops and "mark" that occasionally. I also have rags tied to trees around the yard and they mark them too. Folks laugh but so far ok. I don't worry about rabbits or deer just those things that will bother my chickens. You want to get that smell into the wind.

Can we can pesto? If not why?
No. The olive oil makes it unsafe to can as it can harbor botulism. It freezes well though! You can use those freezer canning jars, or if you like to add a little to pizza or pasta dishes, try freezing it in ice cube trays, when frozen pop them out and store in a freezer safe ziplock baggie. It does brown up a bit in the freezer instead of staying the pretty bright green as when fresh.

I just told this to my husband...he now thinks he has free reign to um....go...all over the yard. Not sure what the neighbors will think.

Think this will work on chipmunks??? They have devestated my peach trees and are now turning their attentions to my blueberry bushes! Grrrr....

ETA : at least they leave my garden alone!

Quote: You can do one more step if you don't like the effects of freezer burn. Dip the frozen cubes in cold water and refreeze quickly maintaining the thin film of ice coating the cubes. Depending on how long you want to freeze them, do a few layers. I do it on a metal cookie sheet or jelly roll pan.
