What are you reading? (or books you highly recommend)

Oh, thank goodness! I'm desperately seeking book recommendations. I've seen several intriguing titles here to add to my summer reading list.

I'm currently reading The Story of Edgar Sawtelle for the second time. I read it a few years ago and it was worth reading again. The animal lovers (all of us, right?) might enjoy it. I won't even pretend it isn't sad, but I'm willing to torture myself for a good story on occasion.

Well shoot! I just bought some d e. So it doesn't work to kill bugs?

Nope, sorry...

No it does not work.

I've had great luck killing bugs both in my house & outside with DE as long as the area is dry. I would obviously never try to use it 'inside' a bird cuz its wet in there, but for regular bugs in dry areas its been a lifesaver. Does it really not work for you guys? Is it possible it might have got wet before you bought it? Is it weird that all of my posts today have been about DE?

Well I bought a sack already so I might as well use it and see what happens. If it ever stops raining.

This is one of the reasons I won't use DE:

I too found mites happily lounging about in the deep layer of DE I had in the bottom of my nestboxes!

Maybe my next book should be about mites and lice! :D

I used DE... birds still got infested with feather lice when the starlings invaded... even if it had gotten wet previously, once dry DE returns to it's original state, microscopic fossilized diatom bodies... my biggest issue with DE, besides not even phasing the bugs, is that there is a warning right on the bag DO NOT INHALE... doesn't seem to be what I would want anywhere that a bird may scratch and fling around into the air to breath in either...

Since we're talking about mites, etc., I had a random question/thought pop into my head last night that won't go away. I'm building a new coop for one of my little flocks. Is there any place for spraying a new coop/new roosts (with permethrin - I have the Gordon's stuff) BEFORE moving them in? I know, odd question, but now it's bugging me (no pun intended).

And to bring it back to books - has anyone read the "The Cat Who..." books by Lillian Jackson Braun? I LOVE them - have them all in paperback (well all the ones up until they started being ghost written). They are interesting and engaging but light and quick reading. And they're fun to read again. Because I'm sorta OCD-ish, I like to read in order. I suppose they would kinda make sense out of order, but in order is easier with back story, etc.

I nearly forgot. I haven't recommended my favourites yet:

Room For One More---Anna Perrott Rose
Cheaper by the Dozen---Frank and Ernestine Gilbreth
Belles on Their Toes---Frank and Ernestine Gilbreth

All great read-aloud books for the family, though they may require some editing if read to little ears.

I had no idea DE would regenerate after it dried! Mine takes on a weird shade of beige & has a hard texture after it gets wet... Though now I think about it, its very likely the dogs are peeing on it.
