Personally I think peoples income and expenses are personal and not a topic for anyone but the IRS at best. I do think knowing how chickens or other farm animals help to offset expenses would be helpful to others.

Gasp! I am thinking more in terms of Texas where a cold winter day is 40 or 50

LOL! Don't say that! We live at 4000ft elevation in Texas, it's a cold cold place around here in the winter. Blizzards, several feet of snow, ice, etc...it happens constantly in the winter. We get negative temps in the winter easily. I remember feeding chickens last winter when it was -3F

There are weeks where it doesn't get above freezing at all!

South east for my fam

So would you be in North Western Texas? I loved driving through, but never stopped or visited

Yep that's pretty much our weather also especially the 70 degree change in a day's time.

Our winters aren't quite as bad as yours but last winter stayed in the 20s for a while - we had 4 heavy snows - and three months of 30 or below. All of our pipes froze and broke since they are all on the outside of the house. Even the ones in the ground that run all over the property to stables and barns froze and broke at the connections/faucets. It was a mess.

Prior to moving here three years ago I had lived in the New Orleans area for most of my life. Didn't even own a coat and rarely wore a sweater. We would have maybe one day a year that got down to 35 the rest of "winter" would be 70s-80s. I was just NOT prepared when we moved a mere two hours away and had to go through that first real winter here.

I know last winter, the last day of winter - it was 20 something degrees one day and literally 80 something the next then it went up daily from there till it was triple digits. Then it went back down again just as fast - 80 one day - 30 the next.

Yes, southwest of Amarillo. Can't blame you for not stopping here

Texas is like Michigan for me, I've lived in both, but traveled through neither completely

I would like to though!

While it may seem untoward to discuss finances, in an economy like this, it is helpful to discuss all finances. We find out ways to save from each other. Sorry you are offended.

I have to agree with Orp Manor, the reason many people are in the situations they are in is because we don't as families and a country discuss finances. This is a very difficult time for a great number of people. Almost 10% unemployment, and many of those employeed are "under"employeed.

Even though my husband and I are both blessed with good jobs and consistent work, we have over the past year trimmed our budget back greatly, i.e. eating at home more, preparing homemade, healthier meals, gardening and raising our own poultry, not traveling as much, using the gas heat more and turning the electric thermostat down or off when we can, etc, etc.

We have seen a positive result from these changes, both in our health and our finances, and it has made us stronger as a couple as well.
