What books do your kids like?

great ideas!

yeah my oldest also loved the chronicles of Narnia and the Star Wars series. I remember reading Wheel of Time years ago when I was 17 or 18, I'm trying to remember how graphic/vulgar it is, I'm a stickler about being the "appropriate police" though she is quite mature for her age and she can handle PG-13ish material so long as it's not sexual in natural

middle dd didn't take to Diary of a Wipmy Kid(though I thought it was cute), didn't really go for the Babysitter's club either(which bummed me out because I LOVED those books when I was her age) She does like Junie B. Jones though. do you guys remember Boxcar Kids? or choose-you-own-adventure books

thanks you guys! the wheels are turning, I'm gonna browse a bit on the website, keep the titles coming!

I really liked Anne of Green Gables (the WHOLE series you miss alot if you stop at the first book) and Percy Jackson and the Olympians is really fun to read!
Just don't read young adult books, many of them are atrociously horrible. (I didn't say all!)

Ann McCaffrey's series Dragon Riders of pern for your oldest

My dear daughter hated reading till I bought her a vampire diary's book. She read all of them and didn't stop there. Now she is 29 and still loves to read.

I like the Goosebump books for the 9yr old

and there are a ton of good stories to read to little ones. But I stay away from the Dora Diego cartoon character books. I just don't think they are interesting enough to keep their attention.

DD's favorite book was A Pokey Little Puppy and she still remember's that it was ,lol

There is no graphic sexuality, but there is a complete lack of mores among the forsaken. And one situation among the protagonists, that while anything but graphic, is certainly not within societal norms (not saying what it is so as not to be a spoiler for someone just starting the books). Email me if you want details, but I have not had a problem with my kids reading the books. Youngest ds is 17, but he's been reading the series for years. In general it is for a more mature person than are the Harry Potter books. At 12, it depends on the kid, but at 14 I would have no problem saying it is okay for a child who does not confuse reality with fantasy (for one that does, it might be a different matter). Although I will say that at least the first two books in the series were published as children's books (each was broken into two books, making a total of four from those two. There was some editing, but I think it was mainly additions to the beginnings: episodes of some of the protagonists as children. Anyways, the books are so long, that by the time a 12 year old reaches objectionable material, chances are she will already be 14 or more.

I have a weird kid. He is 21 now, but he has always and still does ready anything and everything that has to do with history. The child used to steal his history textbooks. He still has some from 7th and 8th grade!

IMO Anne McCaffrey's Dragon Rider series has some more disturbing sexual content than the Wheel of Time series. I personally would let my 12 year old read either one, as I did at that age, but not everyone is like me. (Probably a very good thing.

I personally never allowed my kids to read what I considered gross books, and that includes the Captain Underpants or similar books. There are too many GOOD books that those are a waste of time and intelligence. As a parent I am allowed to censor the books my kids read. I wasn't real fond of Juney B Jones or Goosebumps, either. Any sort of inappropriate behavior that is not dealt with in the book is grounds for me to do deny it to impressionable kids who are still learning the rules of acceptable behavior; don't need any mixed messages. Once a kid has a good basis and understanding of society's rules of behavior, I have less issue with exploring boundaries.

Depends on the specific book. Some of the Pern novels do have blatent sexuality; others do not.

That's why I specified the Dragon Rider series - the Harper series has far less to none at all, depending on the book.
