What brand computer should i get?

Company I work for uses Dell's but they disintregrate as soon as the 3 year warranty expires...amazing. We have lap tops.

Dell uses cheap parts as all of them do. In fact ALL their replacement parts are reconditioned parts.

I'm gonna have to call BS on that one.

"In fact ALL their replacement parts are reconditioned parts."

I've been working on dells for 10 years now and their replacement parts are rarely refurbs/reconditioned. In fact the only ones that come to mind are hard drives from IBM back in the deskstar days.

I've worked with Dell, HP, Compaq, Toshiba, Sony, Acer, Sharp, Emachines (junk), Mac, Chembook, Fujitsu, Itronix, Panasonic and IBM/Lenovo. I'm not talking about <10 machines, I'm talking thousands of machines. Dell has been the most reliable and had the best service of any of the manufactures I've mentioned.

This is what I do for a living folks, I'm not talking about what I hear, or what my dad says, or I heard from so-and-so, I'm talking about hands on every day experience.

All laptops get hot. All of them. Even my little Sharp with the Transmeta Crusoe chip in it. Part of the issue is the faster chips, faster hard drives = more heat. You can control some of the heat by utilizing the power settings so that the system doesn't run the processor at full speed = less heat also = less performance. Laptops really aren't meant to be on your lap. Just look at the venting on the bottom/sides, not ideal for being buried in your cordoroy. So if you use your laptop on you lap a lot, get one of those 10$ cooling pads off of ebay. Not only will it help keep your computer cooler, but it will also protect your legs from the heat.

Now I'm sure somebody will pull up the video of the dell catching on fire. That was a battery issue and the battery was manufactured by Sony, and promptly recalled.

To FCM I agree with you on your 3 factors regarding Mac computers, especially the third. Every time a new MAC OS comes out, none of the older software works, you have to go out and buy all new versions of the same stuff. That's odd! Up until a few years ago, one could only buy parts exclusively from Apple,Inc. Once you go MAC who can afford to go back, huh?

I use two ACER monitors in my home, one for my pc the other for my wife's. ACER makes a good inexpensive LCD monitor and that's why I bought them. Granted the quality and eye- relief isn't on par with a SONY nor a NEC, but you get what you pay for.

For over forty years now, I have NEVER let someone else, with a name like Dale, Dayle or the other Dell, to put a few electronic parts in a steel case and actually charge me greenbacks to do so. I find it harder to wrap up gifts for the holidays!

Brooster...if you're that hard up for a puter; I have an extra mid- tower metal case laying around with a 450 watt power supply that I can give you. In fact the DVD-DS burner is still inside and you can have that, for free! You just pay the postage or whatever? There's even a license+ copy for WINXPSP2 laying here. I only have an 80 GB HDD Western Digital Caviar. You'll need to get a MOBO+ RAM + CPU. Also a monitor is needed. You can get a computer geek near you to put it together so if something goes wrong you can grump to him. All the stuff I have to give has never been used; it's just not the latest/ greatest /fastest / bestest. It would be best to give it to someone who could really use this than to try and sell on Ebay!

Call it anything you want, it's true. I'm on my 3rd reconditioned mother board. When I talked to our IT people, that is reason. Dell does use reconditioned parts on warranty work.

Dell is famous for their "overheating" batteries as we have over 300 laptops and have went through more than one recall on batteries. Company buys Dells, I'm just not impressed over other brands. More hype than reality.

Never said they didn't, just pointed out that your statement of "ALL" was inaccurate. The word ALL is an absolute ya know.

We had to replace a couple hundred batteries for recall issues, but they were from IBM. As I said, dell gets their batteries from SONY as does IBM.

inaccurate statement according to our IT people and you know it if you are who you say you are.

Buy Dells if you want, company I work for does, but we have a tremendous amount of complaints from people that use them in the field. I assume we still buy Dells because of the amount they buy, they get a "deal".

We had to replace a couple hundred batteries for recall issues

the company I work for repaced that many as we all got new batteries.
