What breed have you found to be the quietest?

Not that this is a real answer to the question, but guineas are certainly the least quiet of all. The young females cry buckwheat until they need a drink of water and then start all over again, and everybody squawks when a leaf falls in a harassing manner.

UGH!

NONE of mine are quiet!! They are party girls....I have found that my Australorps are the loudest, screeching all the time. The RIR are next, then the Leghorns, then the EEs.

BO's are not too noisy, I agree. The medium breeds like A'caunas and Meds rarely are. If you like the BO's, then that is about as good as it gets.
The heavies like Brahmas may be a bit better, but not by much. Overall, I echo the non-quiet sentiment with chickens. Cats are quiet - chickens not.

"Quiet" is relative to chickens themselves and their environment, IMHO. Are you trying to keep the chickens on the down low, hidden from prying neighbors or animal control folks?
If so, there is NO such thing as a quiet chicken.
If you are comparing them to a lawnmower or weedwhacker, then they are all pretty quiet.

Most hens wont get too noisy, and so can do the quiet thing. A flock of all females is pretty mellow. But be warned: the occasional alpha femme will become a "hen cock"and can be downright raucous!

If you will be keeping cocks in your flock, the dust is gonna fly and the
"begawwwking" will ring out. All bets are off on quiet, when males are present....

Thanks everyone! I know there are probably no super quiet chickens, but I do need to keep my neighbors from complaining. I won't have any roos, so that problem isn't an issue. It sounds like consensus is that I have pretty quiet breeds. But, I've decided to give the two little RIR's I have to the chicken lady and keep the Golden Comets I was going to give her, instead. I already have them raised to 5 weeks opposed to one week old RIR's so I will get eggs earlier and more if I keep the older chicks. And I think from what it sounds like, the RIR's would be the noisier of the two breeds.

I loved the weed-whacker comment too.

And as far as the alpha hen, I think I see one doing that already at 6 weeks. If indeed she is a SHE! She sort of took over as soon as her three brothers were gone!

Its normal for one hen to become alpha and dominate. Dont be alarmed by it. Dont be surprised when she starts to hencrow, either.
Actually, that kinda sounds like a strangled weedwhacker.

I have 7 buff Orps and I only hear them when someone lays an egg..they will make a rukus for a few second then it all gets quiet again...I would say over all they are pretty quiet....I have no crowers, so for now it is quiet.
I would definately recommend Buff Orps!! Luv my fluffies!!
