WHAT BREED IS THIS GROCERY STORE CHICK?

Looks like a leghorn.
She does, doesn’t she? 😊 Crazy smart, too. Maybe leghorn used to produce the red sex link that produced her?
I assumed all this time she was white rock and Rhode Island red background. I never heard back from the egg producer, so I don’t know. She does have white earlobes, I expected her to have red ones with white rock x RIR cross.
She came out of a medium brown egg.
She is laying light tan ones. Though only has laid 2 eggs so far, not sure if color will change any.😊

Wow she’s gotten big! I can’t believe my Pullets are a month older than this sweetie and, she’s beat them to their first egg.
(you posted July 2nd, that she was hatched that Saturday. Mine hatched Saturday June 6th, so they’re roughly a month older)

She’s 18 weeks. Early layer, but being a hybrid of some kind, I understand that’s not unusual. I have older pullets too that haven’t started laying yet either!😂

I figure she’s from a high production mix breed. I’m wondering what on earth made you try and hatch grocery store eggs?

It was really just a spontaneous spur of the moment idea! Didn’t really think anything was going to hatch, put six eggs in my worst incubator and did not fuss with them too much. I was incubating fancier breeds in my other incubators. Frankie is the only one that hatched out of the six.😊
There are actually many threads about people hatching grocery store eggs here on BYC. People apparently have great success with Trader Joe’s eggs.😊

That’s cool! I’ve heard of people doing it before, I didn’t realize it was actually successful! So did any of the other eggs develop? I’m looking up some other threads on this. It’s quite interesting! :pop

So out of the 6, 3 developed, one of them stopped developing around 10 days and two went to lockdown and one hatched.
You’ll see on other threads you need to know the Julian calendar date these are stamped on all egg cartons. January 1 would be 001 and December 31 would be 365 of course this is off by one day with leap year! Apparently greater success if you can get as fresh as possible eggs. The date stamped on the carton is the date the eggs were packaged and usually the same day the eggs were laid.
The eggs Frankie hatched from were at least three weeks old and possibly a bit older. So older eggs are of course possible but I think greater success with the fresher eggs.
People often get local fertilized eggs from the smaller Heath food stores. Bigger supermarket chains carry them as well.
😊
