What breed of chickens should I get?

Depends on what you want. After 5 years of careful experimentation, I have settled on Wyandottes. They are reliable layers, can go broody, are non aggresive, and (though I prefer breeder quality) are readily available at hatcheries. Hope this helped

Actually, they are all good!!! That is why this so addicting.

When I first got chickens, I got a couple or more of every kind of the most popular - Easter Eggers, Barred Rocks, Gold and Silver Lace and Columbian Wyndottes, Australorps, Buff Orpington, Light Brahma, Comets, Rhode Island Red, Welsummers, of the brown egg layers.

And Blue Andalusian, Ancona, Jaerhon and Lakenvelder of the white egg layers. White egg layers are fine, but after they grow up, they make you promise to never touch them.

What was fun was seeing them grow and getting to know each one and their breeds characteristics.

I found out they all lay well!!! And there are many more breeds than this. What fun!!! - you can try new breeds every year for the rest of your life!

My favorite is Easter Eggers!!! I had the ones from Ideal, and another batch from local dealer/store who would not tell me where he ordered them from. Both great, no little thing I didn't like about them.

If I had to have just one for a flock, it would be Easter Eggers.

For eggs. Meat birds is another discussion.
