Hi all... I am totally new to chickens, and do not own any yet, however I am considering on taking on my first rooster, and in the spring will be looking for some chickens!

A friend of mine has rescued an abandoned rooster this past summer, and is looking for an adopter. I was wondering what breed he is?

This rooster is very used to people, and lives on a horse ranch (I have horses as well, and wanted to be sure to have a horse friendly rooster!) So I think he will be good for me.

Anyone know the breed?

I am a new number and could not post a picture or link, so, I will start with a description and post a photo as soon as I am allowed... This rooster is black and white, with a blackish beak and black legs. Body and tail are black, while the neck and back have white feathers. Sorry, I am new to this, and have no clue what the names of parts are. So, the thing on his head/face is red! (lol, please have patience...)

I would say he's a mutt. The color is Silver Birchen (or a good mock-up of it) but otherwise he's no breed I can think of.

He is most likely a mutt I'd guess... No idea where he came from. He was dropped off at a rescue ranch for horses with no story.

Now, I know NOTHING at all about this yet -

I would like to get into raising chickens for eggs and meat, just as a small hobby. Would this rooster be suitable for my needs, or should I be looking for a specific breed?

Well, he looks big enough he could throw some nice eating cockerals. You really won't know how his girl babies lay until it happens. You could use him, cross him onto good laying hens and see what happens! Chances are you'll get decent enough layers and eaters

He is a really nice looking roo. I would keep him!

I saw one that looked just like him on exhibit at the fair the other day but I didn't see what it was.

I really think I am going to take him! My boyfriend and I love him already - He would be our first pet together, tehe!

Being a horse trainer, I know all about people not knowing what they are getting into when purchasing an animal. My only fear is that I may be making the same mistake! But I do think he is very handsome, mutt or not.

My favorite roo (see my avatar) turned out to be a mutt and I wouldn't trade him for anything. He has the best personality and loves everybody. He is very healthy and will not poop if you are holding him. I even bring him in the house for treats sometimes.

I would just suggest you try to spend some time with him before you take him home to gauge temperament. The last thing you need is a nasty mean rooster. Good luck!!
