What breed should we get into?

Are your lavs 100% English or the American project?

100% English according to the breeder. We'll see in about 6 weeks.

Thanks,
I am wanting clean legged, all around purpose breed. I do understand it is going to take some money to get nice birds. We are going to be in florida and planning on going to some shows

I am done with craigslist and don't plan on really ever getting chickens off of there again, tractor supply is for my back yard laying flock

I wanted to start looking now so I have time to find good quality birds as I do want to show and breed towards the standards of the breed. I am really leaning towards the Orpingtons

Just FYI, the only Orpington colors the APA recognizes right now are: Black, Blue, Buff, and White. I know, they're a bunch of fuddie-duddies. LOL

That's o.k., you can still have a good time showing those colors. Showed my big black cockerel this past weekend and took Best English over some buffs.

I like that you are wanting to narrow it down to one breed. I'm doing the same thing myself. The thing about breeds of chickens is there are as many breeds of chickens as there are different kinds of people that want to raise them. Only you can decide. There's nothing wrong with orphingtons but if I had to pick one breed and they were it I would go for chocolate.

Okay, honestly, the very breeds on your "breeds we like" list are exactly as you want them. They're friendly, quiet, non-aggressive, can come in gorgeous colors, lay awesome eggs and lots of them, and even go broody and hatch out their own chicks. They're kid friendly and wonderful pets, even roosters.

And what do ya know, I raise all of those listed breeds but the Orpingtons.

They're all among my favorites, besides Polish too.
