What breed to get for kids?

I have a 4 year old, a 2 year old, a newborn and a skeptical wife but I am thinking it would be fun to add chickens to our craziness. Am I nuts? If I’m not nuts, what breeds would you suggest that will be good with kids? I also hope to get some eggs to eat. I’m in the NW so fairly mild weather. Hoping to get 4 chickens (maybe a couple more if I get bantams or small breeds) to raise in the backyard. Right now I’m thinking some combo of silkies, polish, maybe a bantam and then a couple egg layers like buff orpingtons or wyandettes. Anyone have any advice? Also, I want the chickens to be comfortable being handled so want to get them as young as possible but should I consider chicks a couple weeks old so they are a little more sturdy?

Both silkies and bantam polish are a joy. Wyandottes are good egg layers and can be friendly and they ate one of my favorites.

polish, silkies, Orpingtons or any color, cochin bantam, cochin standard, millie fluer d'Uccle bantam, barred rocks, EE's, Ameraucana's. There are Tons of freindly breeds! and NO!!! you are not crazy! chickens are wonderful!!! also silkies are a bantam

Our black Australorps think they are lap chickens. We've got a couple bantams that get a little flighty.

Oh and you can't go wrong with a pair of chubby Rouen ducks. My kids love it when they eat meal worms from their hands.

Thant is fun! all my chickens do that! you just have to introduce it at a young age
