I was set on getting a pekin duck, they seemed like they fit the best for my needs. I am having a little problem finding one though, and I have also been reading that maybe I should also look into other breeds of ducks too. This duck would be a house duck, so I can't have anything loud. Pekins are still an option for me of course, but I want to get myself familiar with other breeds that would also do well as an indoor duck incase I happen to find one.

Are you going to go the diaper route? You'll have to buy as they grow but I had a Muscovy duckling in the house for 10 weeks when his mama rejected him he was our baby but it never was our intention to make him a house duck but he would have made a great one Muscovy's are quiet ducks they are called the quackless ducks and are very much puppy like in they wag their tails. My duckling would snuggle with us on the bed and also slept under a towel[kinda like mama feathers] when I held him. He also slept in one of the dog beds when he was with us in the living room, My drake that I was mama too is now 4 yrs old and still likes to come in and visit and hang out but he also has 5 girls that he watches over. They are large ducks like the Pekin but come a lots of colors and can sometimes find them at lakes and parks and rescue centers for water fowl, have you tried a rescue center?

Thank you very much for the reply. I have not tried a rescue center, only because I don't know of one. I was looking into something called the duck rescue network, but I don't think they are maintained anymore. By the way, yes I would go the diaper route.

Yeah, Im going to look into call ducks
I thought thats only for the females of those breeds
That's true females are louder but calls fly real well so you'd have to take that into consideration when taking your duck outside you wouldn't want it to fly off and land in a neighbors back yard that had dogs. Ducks just naturally love to fly so if one can it probably will or try anyway. I have Muscovy's and I clip the one wing on my females to keep them home I live in the woods with lots of preds and a river down below my house.

Here in NC we have Carolina Water Fowl rescue and they adopt their water fowl out even their chickens they rescue so maybe a vet or ag agent would know of a place close driving distance to you. Rescues do a wonderful job and that way you'd be helping a duck that possibly got dumped after Easter or maybe had gotten injured some how. Lots of domesticated water fowl and Lord only knows what else gets dumped daily here in this country.

YAY, call ducks! I really can't recommend a better breed for a house duck. They're small, adorable, and very, very affectionate! I'd say the only breeds that come close to personality and cuddly-ness are muscovies, but they're so big they can be a handful sometimes. My calls are the size of pigeons, so likewise they have pigeon-sized poops and changing their diapers is a cinch since I can pick 'em up with one hand if I need to.

Buuuuut yeah, the females are loud. If you get a drake like I have, they're quieter, but once puberty hits they can become real jerks. In that case I'd highly recommend getting your drake neutered when they're still young, it's a relatively uninvasive procedure many good avian and barnyard vets will perform, just be sure you get one who has worked specifically with ducks.

Im actually really glad I didn't get a duckling yet. I really want a call duck now, I was turned off at first from them after hearing they are loud. Now that I understand the males are quiet I really want a call duck. I especially like how small they are, and yes they are adorable. Now I just need to find a call duckling... the struggle lol

Good luck with that, their breeding window is teeny tiny. :/ If you're willing to wait though, I'd be happy to give you some of my eggs when the time is right! Knowing these two love birds, they may not wait until next season to start getting their freak on.
