What breed would you say is the best layer???

Plymouth Rock - Barred (aka: Barred Rocks) are supposed to be the best all-around layer amongst the dual-purpose breeds. If all you want are the eggs, and don't mind scrappy little chickens, then any "layer only" breed such as leghorn - white or brown - should do.

This is like asking who thinks their children are the best.

I think they'll all surprise the heck out of you. My sexlinks are *my* best egglayers. Only 1 of them is friendly and that's the white one Foghorn. She's a sweetie. The others would rather jump off the roof then let me touch them. Next would be my Black Austalorps. They lay me chalky white eggs, but usually only 1 of them lays every day. The other two are either hiding them in the bushes somewhere or just aren't interested, but in the winter it's every day so it makes me wonder if they're not in the bushes somewhere. The Austrolorps are the friendliest. The Wyandottes are better in the winter, but then again I did catch one laying in the bushes and brought in her clutch. Sneaky girls!

For me, Red Sex-Links for sure. Rhode Island Reds are a close second. The other breeds I have (that I'm comparing to) are: Barred Rocks, Buff Orpingtons, Golden Laced Wyandottes, Australorps, Easter Eggers, several back yard mixes, and one Black Sex-Link.

Well I believe it is already proven that the pearl white Production leghorn is the best layer. With the best layer (in my opinion) They loose there smarts and are not very tame. There breed to eat poop and lay eggs until they drop dead!

Our black sex links are great layers. Out of 9 hens we usually get 7 to 8 eggs per day. When I was a little girl my daddy got what he called 'lay'in hens'. I know now that they were Leghorns. I've never had buff orpingtons before, but thats what I chose for my backyard chickens and they are just 3 weeks old now. Time will tell...
