What Breeds are best for me??

Thanks for the tips! I have already emailed a local breeder to see if she has any bantam options. Ideally I can get 3 different breeds. I like the dual purpose idea, I haven't decided if I will be able to eat the older layers or not....will decide when I get there.

I hope you understand that getting chicks from any place, you may end up with a rooster. Just read the posts on this forum for a day--half seem to be about getting roos from the farm stores or buying straight run chicks and getting more roos than pullets. I ordered sexed pullets from a reputable hatchery where sexing chicks is about 90 % accurate, and was very pleased. A local breeder may not guarantee pullets either, but if you buy older chicks they may know the sex by 4-6 weeks. Personally I would order all girls from a hatchery if I could only get 3. Meyer Hatchery and MyPetChicken are 2 places where you can order 3-4 chicks at a time.

Eggcessive, I do understand and don't plan on getting chicks. There is a local breeder that sells them sexed. I plan on getting pullets that are a little older that can go into the tractor right away. Thanks for the warning!
