What can I do to make my chickens quiet?

We worried about the chicken noises bothering the neighbors, until we realized all the neighbors had chickens, but we didn't really ever hear any chicken noise over the sound of the neighbors dog barking.

We had chickens a year or two ago, but then a neighbor complained. We thought they didn't like the rooster so I sadly agreed to kill it, then about two months later the HOA (Homeowners Association) told us that we couldn't keep the hens because they sang the 'I LAID AN EGG!! COME LOOK!!' song. We gave them away to a farmer and after around 3-4 months we got bad news. One was taken by a coyote and one got a throat obstruction. Both died. I've never felt so much sadness in my years of life.

Sorry it took me so long to post this! We put a radio in our coop on a timer and its been working great! They make noise in the afternoon sometimes, but they are usually very quiet in the mornings. I just wanted to let you guys know

Don’t hold your breath for a response. The post is from 2013 and the person hasn’t been seen on BYC since 2017.
I too am intrigued by the radio. Mine do like having music playing but I hadn’t noticed that it made them any quieter. I am not bothered by their noise so I may just not have noticed.

Ah! Thanks! I don’t care myself but worried for my neighbors … our town technically allows 3 and I have 6 lol (state minimum). Today was the first time they’ve done it so early.

Not that I know of...my chickens are pretty quiet except when they are laying eggs..and it seems as though egg laying is a community event...One chicken goes in the next box and starts cackling the "I'm laying an egg song" While all the other chickens freeze up and answer with the "yes you are laying an egg song"...it's pretty funny....Hen will cackle rooster will cackle, other chickens will chatter...hen will cackle, rooster will cackle, other chickens chatter...I like it. I always know when I have an egg done. Lol.

Here, it's not "I'm laying an egg". I

t's "I wanna lay in that nest and it's OCCUPIED! No one else is allowed to lay ANYWHERE until I get MY nest!"

"Fine! I'm getting help! Mr Rooster, make her leave me alone"

"Yes, miss....oh-oh. You ladies work this out yourself. I'm outta here!"

(I've witnessed the drive off the nest not wanted followed by more screaming for the desired nest....and the driven off coming back with a rooster)

My reaction: oh, you poor sap! Don't get in the middle of a hen spat!
