what can I expect from Murray Mcmurray?

Here's our results with MM,not exactly great.
I did ok subtitutes if needed in order to ship our chickies.
First opened the box at PO & all looked well, when we opened it at home 2 were noticably almost dead. So I spent 2 hrs. trying to feed these birds that were trying to thrive and did'nt. They said to put honey on the beaks but it did'nt work. Of course the free exotic died ,so we'll never know what it was.The other was a WCB Polish That was a sub.for the buff Polish we did order,a 3 later was a GLPolish. So those were the first we had lost since getting birds, which isn't to bad

,all the others are from a feed store.
They also included 6 Red Star cockrels for warmth,it took quite awhile to find them homes.,who wants 6 boys.
We got an extra GL polish which is 1 that died and 2 WCB polish instead of the buff and one of those died,so now I have a WCB pole with no mate.I also ordered a Mille Fleur D'uccle and they sent me a chick that looks like a D'anver, but has feathered feet,do they have mixed birds?.

The D'anvers don't have feathered feet and it's not a MF.
They sent substitutes and didn't mark the invoice or have it in the computer when I asked, our order was definetly different.
Anyway that's our first and last with them plus, their prices are the high! Not impressed at all.

Hey there. I ordered 2 sets of 25 so far from them and have had only 1 casualty (who died this morning from some unknown inability to thrive only 4 hours after arrival from the post office.)

All the rest have been perky and great--everything I could hope for!

I Agree We Ordered From Them Once And Got Them Timely And Healthy

We Now Concentrate On Sq Birds Which Hatcheries Dont Really Carry
But If I Used A Hatchery I Would Use Them Again

I have great affection for MM because I have been an avid reader of their catalog since 1985 (think "wish book"). I have ordered from them twice and had good luck. The last time I ordered 27, got 31. One was DOA, 1 arrived with straddle-leg but I was able to help it. All survived to adulthood and were healthy.
One thing I like about them is that you can order 1 of each breed. Many, if not most, other hatcheries have a minimum of "5 each per sex or breed" or else have a charge to go under (as does Ideal).

If I order again it will be their rarest of rare pullets.

First order of Rainbow Layers, half were dead within 4 days. Of the remainder, they were great layers. I gave a goodly number away to help a few other folks get started with flocks. The two that I kept both died of heat last week.

Hey BYC Members,

It's pretty obvious that everyone will have a different story to tell. However, it's good to hear from other people and their stories.

In April I ordered 900 baby chicks in one week from five different national hatcheries. Less than 10 were DOA.

If you want to learn more about McMurray Hatchery or any other national hatchery just listen to my radio show this week. It's "Hatchery Week" on the Backyard Poultry with the Chicken Whisperer radio show. On Thursday I will be interviewing McMurray Hatchery.
