I was just looking for some input. My six year old DD is responsible for keeping her room picked up, setting the table, and putting her laundry away. She'd love to do the dishes -- or so she says right now.

She is supposed to care for her cats, but doesn't do it like she should - so I do it. She'd love a horse/pony, but I told her that horses are a much bigger responsiblity than the cats. When she can do the cats without being asked and is ready to take care of a horse before and after school then we'd think about it. Mommy doesn't need anymore chores!

Just wondering what chores other children have. Thanks!

I make a list for my 17 year old every day. It isnt super extensive or anything like that. Things like taking care of her animals, cleaning her room, putting away dishes etc. Its (except for animal care) generally something different every day.
The other thing we do is take turns cooking.

My 7 & 9 year old kids have animal chores everyday (one feeds the dog & the rabbit; one waters the dog & the rabbit). Then they're expected to do additional chores every Monday (one changes all the rubbish bins in the house, one sweeps the kitchen floor). On a daily basis we ask them to other things like put laundry away, tidy up their rooms or other areas they've left a mess in, straighten/neaten specific messy areas, feed or water other animals, put clean dishes away, dust, vaccum etc (though we only pick one or two of these daily).

I think they could do more, but I am too unorganized to make sure they do it consistently

so that is all they have for now.

Do the dishes, take out the trash, do your own laundry, make your bed, clean up your room regularly, . . . Those are the main ones around here.

Well, at 6 years old you can pretty much plan on the horse/pony being mostly your responsibilty as everything involved with that will require your oversight!

My youngest is 9 and he is responsible for his room with varying degree's of success, he sorts clothes for the laundry. vacuums and picks up after the dogs. We take turns scooping the cat's litter box. On weekends he also helps me clean out the goat barn and chicken coop. Right now he is lobbying for a bunny and based on his current work ethic and the level of care required I'll probably relent.

My oldest is 5.5....she's responsible for picking up her shoes and toys from the living room, unloading the dishwasher, putting her dirty dishes away and helping fold towels. She started taking out the trash and sorting the glass bottles on her own volition.

That seems to be enough for now, but, hopefully, as she grows, we'll add animal care to the list.

my kids are 2 and 4 they have to pu all toys at the end of the day or if we have company. and they love to help me clean so its great for now until they realize its a chore.

My 7 yr old is responsible for ensuring that all dirty clothes that are not in a bedroom (mine, or his sister's) are in the laundry basket in front of the washer. He also lets the dog out in the morning, and sets the table. We also have a pack of 'chore cards' that are drawn daily. My 5 yr old feeds the dog, and makes lunch for herself and her sister (Peanut butter sandwiches, and water to drink), though I usually have to feed them more, stawberries, yogurt, apple slices... the stuff she can't manage. My 5 yr old and her 3 yr old sister also are in charge of cleaning up any toys that get spread around, and tidying up the shoes.

Yeah, I know -- in regards to the horse. I figured around 10 or 11 years old she may be more up to that kind of challenge. I've told her that she'll have to clean out the horse stalls. She thinks she'd like to clean out the chicken coop. I should let her help with that. And I do need to let her help with dirty dishes! I just need to give in and let someone else help.

Hmm I think I must be the mean Mom...

My daughter is 14. She must:
Get herself up and cleaned up, dressed and ready for the day.
She has to feed and water the animals. (Goats, chickens, dog)
She has to load and unload the dishes
Do the recycling
Transfer the laundry
Make sure all the trash cans in the house are empty
Make sure there are no dirty dishes lying around the house in public areas only.
Load the car with trash and recycling to go to the dump.

With the laundry, my husband puts in the loads, My daughter does all transfers, and I do all folding and putting away.

She gets paid per job for all her chores, provided they are done correctly. If they aren't done, I just do them myself and she gets no money.
