I got a new pair of Cochin bantams yesterday! I really just wanted a hen for a broody but I had to buy them as a pair. The hen is a beautful Splash (I named her Maggie), but I have no idea what color the rooster is (haven't thought of a name for him yet). He's mostly blue but his neck feathers are red and I was wondering if he might be a blue red, blue partridge, or just a mix? The lady I bought him from said his parents were blue so maybe it was something in their genes? His comb is kinda weird too - the front is single, but the back isn't. If I happened to breed them, any ideas what color I would get? I probably won't even breed them though...I'm thinking about finding him a good home and getting another rooster to breed to Maggie.

Yeah, looks like he's got some partridge in him. Even when my boys had brassyness in them, it wouldn't show that obviously.

    Pretty hen!

I would say the roo is a partridge crossed with a blue or black. The hen is a splash. Really pretty girl. Are you goin to try to get chicks from them? [IMG]

Not sure if you wanted honest opinion.. but if you do, here goes.

He's probably either out of hatchery stock or a cochin cross(or both!) or there's a mix with another breed somewhere in his past. She has pretty good cochin shape, him..... not so much. The comb is either faulty or a result of mixing with another breed with a different comb or even a crested breed(he himself isn't showing any crest hints though) in the past. The red on neck can either be an off color, a spot of color that isn't supposed to be there, this happens occasionally in some solid colored matings, it is something many breeders strive to get rid of. Or it could again be a clue to him having a mixed color past.

If you want birds shaped more like the hen then you probably want to send him off and get a "better" cochin rooster.

If you breed him with the hen, half splash babies half blue babies. Randomly, some will have off color hackles and also probably some will have slightly odd combs from him.

In any case, have fun with your birds. [IMG]

I would have to agree that the roo looks like a mix. A red parent is in him somewhere in the past.

thanks y'all! I figured he had something mixed in him. I am going to be looking for a better roo to breed with her I think.

Blue Partridge. He isn't show quality however because his coloring isn't right, and neither is his comb.
But Maggie sure looks good! [IMG]
