Hi yall!

Just wondering what container to use for FF? I was using glass mason jars but soon figured it was too hard to get it all out. The chickens were attacking me to get at it because it wouldnt come out fast enough for them

Next I tried a 60 quart igloo cooler but I thought that was too big.

My question is if I use a five gallon bucket does it have to be food grade or can you just use a new one from the Home Depot or big box store? I asked to buy one at my Walmart and they said they are not allowed to sell them. I dont want to pay a lot for one if I dont have to. By the way, I have 16 LF, 10 babies and 5 Bantams
Thanks
marie

Sorry, what is FF? Fresh food? If you use a bucket, it should be fine if you are just feeding it to the chickens, no matter what grade. I would just use a new one, and wash it before use.

Questions answered by reading this.

Before I learned about fermented feed, I thought FF meant full feed (as opposed to restricted feeding which I had been studying).

Ohhhhh....okay!! That makes a lot more sense. What tricked me was the mention of mason jars. We put any scraps of lettuce, bruised fruit, old carrots, cuts of cabbage, ect. in a mason jar to later feed the chooks. Sometimes some lettuce would get stuck to the bottom or something would get stuck. I thought 16 paws was talking about kitchen scraps!

Lol Wal-Mart wouldnt sell you something? Never thought I hear that. But dont they sell stuff in buckets?

A 5 gallon bucket is fine

Personally I use 5 gallon totes that I just scoop from. I got them from Walmart. If you want buckets (which would be easier to drain) you might want to ask around at various restaurants. They get pails of food stuffs. When they are done sometimes they throw them out, recycle, or give away the buckets. The plus side of getting them from a food establishment is you know its not been used for nasty chemicals that might have sunk into the plastic. As far as what not to use...metal and anything that has toxic stuff before. No reason not to recycle but just keep in mind a bucket that had solvent or other chemicals might not wash completely out.
