What Could Cause This & How Do I Treat It??

My first thought was severe infection. My guess is from getting something in her eye or as you mentioned scratching it on accident.

The blackness of her face is puzzling to me. The first picture where you show her eye I thought maybe a tumor but the blacked area seems to come and go with the swelling.

@Eggcessive @Wyorp Rock @Pyxis @Tesumph

At first it wasnt too bad, from the side you couldn’t even see the swelling u less you saw her fromthe side(so I assumed scratch too)....but then the sinus became very swollen along the eye base ...and then the black appeared :-/ (the pictures uploaded in the wrong order but I tried to label them to help)

I am also thinking cancer, but hopefully not. What dosage of Tylan were you injecting? Any chance you can get something stronger, Baytril maybe?
It looks kind of like an extreme case of Coryza but I would think that would smell pretty terrible. Best case scenario IMO would be an eye or ear infection that blew out of proportion.

FYI, there’s no point in continuing Corid, it is rendered useless when mixed with vitamins and electrolytes. Corid works by eliminating thiamine from the body, thus starving the coccidial infection out. Thiamine is in that vitamin+ pack, so that’s just going in circles.

Oh! I had no idea that the corrid & vitamin pack were cancelling eachothet out- thank you!!

We weighed her before starting the Tylan50 & she was at 8.75 lbs so I did .75cc injections. Started out with intramuscular (breast) but she bruised & seemed to have discomfort right afterwards so I switched to subcutaneous for the remainder of the treatment.

I can order some Baytril & give it a shot! Its my first time doing injections & I was nervous so went with the less potent medication (since it wasn’t as bad at that point). I’m in SoCal & can’t get needles without a script so ended up ordering 100 pack on amazon, so I’ve got enough to give her anything necessary...just ordered some B-12 complex yesterday to give her a boost if nothing else :(

That looks so painful! From the extent of it, it looks and sounds like it is beyond repair. Poor Girl!!! Although painful for YOU, culling her may be the most humane thing to do at this point. I’m so sorry that you are going through this. :hugs

Awww... poor girl. Does she seem to be in pain? Sadly, I’m thinking it’s cancer, but hope I’m wrong. An avian Vet would be best if that’s an option for you.

Would you consider trying a colloidal Silver salve?

Shockingly she doesn’t seem to be in any pain at all...I can’t believe it!

Other than her hesitation to wander the farm as much as the other girls during recess (due to only having 1 good eye) I haven’t noticed any change in behavior or signs she’s uncomfortable.

I actually have colloidal silver spray already that we use in the cats water to prevent bladder infections...I started out using it after the epson salt soak while waiting for thr Tylan & needles to arrive. Do you have any recommendations on how to make a salve??

@casportpony?

I'm wondering if you could do a scrape and send a sample to a vet to see what exactly it is that you're dealing with. Applying antibiotics doesn't do much if it isn't something that antibiotic will kill.

Are there vet’s listed online that take shipped samples or do you have any idea how I could go about finding one?

The nearest avian vet in our area is a few hours away & EXTREMLY expensive ($300 just for the inital exam...).

It is probably a retinal melanoma (cancer,) according to a pathologist (hubby,) who gets to look at a lot of chicken pictures.

Oh no :(! He belives the progression looks similar? Could that be what the black growth at the front near her beak is from?

If you're in CA give that chicken some medical cannabis oil. When a family member was diagnosed we did extensive research and the stuff is amazing. I'm sure you don't want a stoned chicken wandering around but I say it's worth a try. Start with a few drops and go from there.

Much more effective than colloidal silver, IMHO. :idunno
