What did you do in the garden today?

This saturday I am having a bunch of people come over and help me plant my plants. (I feed them in exchange.) Hundreds of tomatoes, peppers, cucurbits, etc. Everything that's a warm weather/summer plant, basically.

In preparation for it we're cleaning all the animal cages/coop, tilling and weeding the beds and prepping the house a bit for company.

So today I am spending the whole day in the garden removing 300sqft of weeds. :p On one bed in particular the weeds are extremely thick and just have to be tilled in. There's no pulling them.

After saturday the garden will be stunning. :)

Mushrooms are coming up all over the place. May need to dry some of them. Working up the soil for grape vines. Turning old clothes line into a grape arbor. Chickens are helping with the project. For every spade full of sod I flip over, I have to toss several chooks out of the way.

Had our first cuke of the season. It was 2" long and oh so very sweet and tender. It was a bush cuke, grown in a pot. I finally transplanted both pots into the garden today.

Had a neighbor visit this morning. He brought me 4 empty egg cartons and a jar of fresh strawberry rhubarb jam his wife made. I sent him home with a dozen tomato plants: all sorts of varieties.

I think I may have missed my window for hilling my potatoes. However, our jujube tree is really heavy with flowers. I am really looking forward to trying to make some jujube butter this year. We harvested a 5 gal. bucket full last year, but only harvested what we could reach with a ladder. I might try another technique to get into the middle and crown of the tree.

I had to look jujube butter up. Pretty neat. I read you can use the fruit in place of various others. Have you tried any pies or other stuff?

Maybe you could attach a large butterfly net or fishing net to a long pole. My friend made one of these to get the apples out of the tops of the tree. He even attached little prongs to it to pull the fruit off the fall right in the net worked pretty well

I dry our wild harvested morels every year. This year was a bit of a dud year for some reason, our usual patch had a few big ones which we left for spore but we did find a few for dinner further out of the normal range. I love dried mushrooms, they make a stew extra delicious!
Yes they do make a stew extra delicious. We have wild mushrooms growing in all different areas throughout our property. I always want to go try to identify them to use them but way too scared. I know if you don’t know exactly what you’re doing You could be making a trip to the hospital. I don’t know my stuff that well. I’m envious of you that do though. Sounds delicious
