What did you do in the garden today?

Trying to decide if action or inaction is best. Tomorrow 40-50mph winds are predicted due to front moving through. The tomatoes and peppers are in the raised beds, but without any wind protection, and we have farm fields to the west and east, nothing to mitigate winds. The plants have been acclimated for weeks, although always protected from higher winds before planting in the beds. Since they were planted, they have survived the over 4"of rain the other night (and must have been very windy and rain was very heavy at times). Since they are short and with minimal leafing, I suppose they will handle the 40-50mph winds. Thoughts?

rain is easy, wind is brutal. Not only does it stress limbs, roots, and trunks, but it is super dehydrating.

OC however you protect them, you have to be careful that it is secure and doesn't blow off and do damage to.

Thinking maybe weed cloth about 6-8" tall zip tied to the tomato/pepper cages, like a cylinder - so that the wind can sort of pass through. Maybe using boards across the front of the raised beds would be better? I could nail/screw in the boards, but would be a basic wind deflector only on one side, but might mitigate the wind enough to help. The beds are 16' long x 4' wide, so not sure if the back row of plants would benefit?

depends on how big your cages are but you could also toss bags over them and secure. the conical shape of the cages will allow winds to safely pass around the cages.

Creating a wall of boards will create a low pressure vortex on the leeward side that can do just as much damage as the initial winds.

OC it IS early enough in the season to just let them be and hope for the best.

Yes, my hesitation of doing anything is because the "fix" can sometimes cause worse problems. Whatever protection I apply might rip, break and that is what does damage - or, creates worse situation like a vortex of wind. I may just cross fingers and hope for the best.

Oh so miserable today, 87 and Humid. Walk out and feel like you're breathing in a sauna. Ugh. So trip to Lowes, got hose and sprinkler and twine and a hosta to put in a bare spot. Still have plants from shopping trip Friday. They're not going in the ground unless it happens before 10am lol.

Twine is to hold together something as yet undetermined for zuchinni to climb up.
