What did you do in the garden today?

Today: cold, wet.

must do today: make travelcages for the chickens I’ll take to auction tomorrow. I’ll use cardboard boxes and chicken wire, that way I don’t have to stay if I don’t want to. I’ve been collecting eggs to take to auction as well, since they should have good fertility and can be sold as hatching eggs (barnyard mix).

another great weekend ahead, might be able to finally get my hands on some sulfur for the high pH garden soil. Have lots of peat moss and wood ashes to additionally help amend the soil.

Hight PH as in acidic or neutral?

Good morning gardeners. Yesterday was very nice, warm and little wind. I made the trek to HD and they were sold out of stove pellets. Apparently people have been stocking up due to the corona virus craze. I was down to 6 bags so I just need to get into April. Went to a local hardware store and they were sold out as well, same reason. I ended up at my regular feed store and picked up 5 bags and will get another 5 on Monday and get a discount for eggs then. Cleaned the pellet stove and got the new garden bed screwed together. I was also able to center it a bit better. My rooster thinks I made a special place for him, as he immediately jumped into the frame and started pecking and scratching about. I will be putting cardboard on the bottom before I put in the dirt, but not until the dirt has arrived. I may put some leaves in there to encourage the chickens to root about and fertilize for now. I'll be attaching a fence after it's planted. My leek seedlings need to be transplanted into larger containers for now. They got really tall. I have some fence repairs to address. The slope behind my house is always inching forward and heaving the ground. Sort of like a glacier. So the heaving has disrupted two sections of the plastic picket fencing and the gate. It's a two person job so I just need to find someone to give me hand. Hopefully when my neighbor gets back from vacation I can ask him. Not much else going on. Need to clean the floors. I have some houseplants that need repotting, but that's about it. Tomorrow is supposed to be cold, then warming up to mid 50's next week. I should be able to pound the tree fertilizer spikes into the dirt by then. Have a great day everyone.

What are u around now?

The soil test (done by Penn State labs) indicates a 7.8 pH and other metrics that say the soil is in need of amending. So, the pH will be addressed first. We may just sow some cover crop to use as green manure in that large bed in prep for late summer/fall planting. We also have 10 raised beds with soil from different sources and the metrics on those are better. The pH is higher than desired (at 7.3), but other metrics are ok- the raised beds need amending, but not so bad as the high pH bed.

Something here appropriate to the time of season,,, and to cheer everyone on.
