What did you do in the garden today?

I'm jealous. I cannot seem get somebody to just drop mulch for me. I have to play per yard from a landscape supply. I tried registering through sites online and I never get anything. Additionally, everything seems to be outsourced by the electric company and township, so that don't have a giant pile they need to give away either.

they just so happen to be doing a major clearing job for the power company on my road, and it’s Asplundh so it’s a huge company. If they’re in your state it’s worth a try. normally we’re too remote to get...anything cool at all 😄. (What I wouldn’t give for a delivered pizza!)

but I super lucked out because as he was dumping it, the last 1/3 out was cedar! I’m gonna scrape that off for around the kids’ tree fort.

Think I post a new sign "aged chicken waste " 2 bucks a bag have 100 white feed bags I can fill staple
I think that is a great idea. We were thinking of doing the same with our horse poop and posting on craigslist. We have bags and poop galore. I would have loved to have been able to pick up a bag of something for my garden pre the fancy feed and poop fertilizer machines. Let me know what happens if you do that.

See I just have chickens but will post it

Have been having a busy two weeks now. Just checking in with my apple seedlings (red container) and pear seedlings (white container).

Had 15 healthy chicks out of 21 hatch so I’m busy with that. The 16th hatched one is not looking good, if it’s a rooster my husband said we may put him down. We’re going to wait a week.

I will keep asking, are my seedlings still good? No need to put em in their own individual pots yet?

Also wanted to clarify... you can keep them together at least until they’re 5+ inches or more... their roots are actually pretty woody and easily separated/moved. To ease your mind, most nurseries knock the dirt off their woody stock and ship them bare root (in damp, shredded newspaper.) What I usually do, is designate a small patch in my garden as a nursery... they can be planted as far apart as you have room for... so close if needed and separated later. What’s good about this is the soil temp is better regulated (dark pots get hot) and you don’t have to worry as much about over or under watering. They’re fairly resilient 🌱

I was giving some good thoughts to asparagus but then I red on the package it takes a couple of years before you get a decent harvest. I'm now more on the fence plus my wife said she don't eat it occasionally. The strawberries I planted last year gave a fair amount of fruit but it was on the smaller side. The plants don't look quite so great right now. I'm debating on what to do and perhaps starting over. I think it will be better to wait a couple more weeks before making the decision though.

Good luck with the bagged manure idea! I wish I could find small amounts locally without it being at the box store or mass produced where you don't truly know what you are getting!

Good morning gardeners. Cold day here, then warming up tomorrow. I re-planted my leek seedlings into larger pots to give their roots more room to grow. It looks like they are surviving the move for now. Yesterday while I was outside tending to my flock I noticed that one of our resident hawks (pretty sure it was the mama bird) was swirling around the nesting tree across the street. Also noticed the trees are starting to bud. I prefer not to go out on weekends, but I need to pick up the smelly dryer sheets today. I want to get them onto my fruit trees before the deer come around looking for a snack. I'm thinking the Big Lots store should be pretty empty. It usually is, even on weekends and I think they will have cheap, smelly dryer sheets. I finally picked the green lemon from my tiny tree. I need to work on growing this little guy healthier before letting it set fruit again. It started dropping a lot of leaves in the past 2 weeks so it looks worst than the Charlie Brown Christmas tree. I sort of envy those of you who can actually buy mulch in bulk right now. As I mentioned in an earlier post, the garden centers are closed for 3 to 4 months during the winter here. You can't order or even look at the prices for anything until they open. Hopefully in another two weeks. I would love to be able to start filling my new garden bed with dirt right now, but it's not available. Happy planting to all that can right now, and have a great day.
