What did you do in the garden today?

I want to see Billy Bob Suburbia catch, kill and eat the chickens his child has all named and played with for the past 12 weeks.
Hey! I live in suburbia and I can assure you I have no problem catching, killing and eating (and feeding to the family) the chickens my child plays with. He was too young to name them but knows they have names, some after his favorite cartoon characters.
The challenge for me is getting DW to let me kill them. She says they are just egg supplying pets, not meat. :he She didn't stop me from slaughtering a lot of quail and a duck. I think if we raised boilers she wouldn't mind me slaughtering them.

But you AREN"T billy bob suburbia. The people going into the feed stores here, have never even been in before, aren't hunters, and don't know what the h&^** they're doing. (Manager is friend of mine.) PLUS they aren't following local code, which isn't up to farm store to provide or enforce. HOAs, local zoning, location of coops, types of coops, and NO ROOSTER laws are solid in the city.

LOL. No meat on a layer. And TOUGH As nails unless you cook them FOREVER! SO let her egg pets be. THere is something to be said for chicken therapy too.

Besides you're one of us that just happens to LIVE in suburbia. Unless that was YOU at the shop today picking up 2 dozen chicks in your new Mercedes C-Class and putting them in the truck because they're dirty? Jaw is still dropped from that encounter.

I totally had no idea what I was doing when we got our first chicks 2 years ago. I did about 30 minutes of research online. :)
As for not following code/laws, that part is important, at least to the degree of being allowed to have them. I admit, I push the boundaries of the law myself, but I AM allowed to have chickens with a simple 1 time permit. As for ducks, turkeys and quail... the law is not very clear in my opinion. :plbb I hope the chicks find good homes no matter who is buying them though. Worse than not following code is dumping a helpless chick on the side of the road somewhere, which is what I fear will be happening when people who are not allowed to have chickens get caught with them.

The first one is always the best! No matter how big or small the harvest, that first harvest from your first garden is unbeatable! Enjoy the veggies! I hope you savor them and fall in love with the taste of fresh veggies. They're far better than what the store has to offer.

I barely made it inside with the cucumber - but I shared with the family ! Lol - I’ve always wanted a garden but had to wait until I owned my own home and it was well worth the wait ..... now my spaghetti squash should be ready any day now !

Agree. Luckily our shelter takes in poultry.

I want to know what celebrity spewed the great idea of raising chickens for meat and eggs to the general public who bought it hook line and sinker.
Idiots. They aren't going to house them properly, or feed them properly, keep them warm and hydrated, or the dog will get them, or the neighborhood fox, or will be pissed when they turn out to be 80% cockerels, NOR wait 6 plus months for one egg per bird. PLUS, I want to see Billy Bob Suburbia catch, kill and eat the chickens his child has all named and played with for the past 12 weeks. OH and they're more likely to get salmonella from playing with the chicks than CV19.

I just spit my wine out. :lau
